FIGHT FRAUD. Don’t Punish Innocent Care.
I have seen well-intentioned, reputable hospice agencies get caught in the dragnet in the name of fraud.
Licenses suspended. Billing privileges revoked. Effective dates backdated without warning.
Not because they were criminal enterprises…
…but because documentation gaps, clerical issues, operational breakdowns, or compliance failures snowballed into catastrophic consequences before they had the chance to self-correct.
As an industry, we absolutely should support efforts to eliminate legitimate fraud.
But we also cannot ignore the collateral damage happening to ethical providers trying to care for patients in an increasingly complex regulatory environment.
When agencies disappear overnight, patients don’t just lose a provider.
They lose continuity.
Staff lose jobs.
Families scramble for alternatives.
Communities lose access.
The margin for operational error is shrinking fast.
Which makes operational accountability more important than ever:
• Documentation oversight
• Billing accuracy
• Compliance workflows
• Timely physician signatures
• Eligibility validation
• Audit readiness
• KPI visibility
• Leadership accountability
Because today, being clinically excellent is no longer enough.
If your operations are fragile, your agency is vulnerable.
Build the system, don’t BE the system.
